Jan 10: 366-10 Artistic Filters

On January 7th, we saw how you can use one photo to become a texture overlay over another photo (or image, if you are an artist in other media).  Today’s lesson is how to use your ONE image to be a texture overlay for the same photo for a wonderfully creative final result.  Now is the time to play and experiment with whatever graphics program you use … as my blogger artist-friend Naquaiya says, just dive in and do it!  Many of the programs have various artistic filters that you can test out.  NOTE:  when using your original image this way, start by making a copy of the image – do NOT play with the original itself!  You don’t want to “save” by accident and lose that starting file!  During the experimenting process – do each filter application on a NEW layer – this makes it oh-so-MUCH easier to make tweaks in a previous layer (or delete a filtered layer altogether) and will make your playtime a lot more enjoyable!  Title your layers, so you know what you did  and can also find what you want to change much easier.  And a final suggestion:  save your final image as an un-merged document (in Photoshop, that is a .psd) for future changes you can easily make.  Only then will you merge/flatten and save your newly created work of art as an image that can stand on it’s own.

Earlier this week Bennett (one of my Cocker Spaniel “kids”) and I joined a local photographer Meetup group (check out Meetup.com for a group in your area that interests you!) for a wonderful stroll on the beach in Imperial Beach, CA.  One of my photos was of a young boy running thru the wet sand.  Without a model release, I couldn’t use the full image that showed his face, but that’s fine, as cropping to his feet gave me a much more dynamic shot that conveyed the feeling I wanted!  But it still lacked the punch that I was going for, so, like Naquaiya says, I decided to just dive in (no pun intended) and do it – it was time to use this image and get creative.  The resulting image is absolutely my favorite work of the day’s outing!  (click thru for the larger view to see all the yummy details).  I used five different layers (one was the original, untouched layer) with four different artistic effects to get this look.

Please do post links to projects where YOU have used this provided texture and tell us how you tweaked it to fit your needs.  Feedback is welcomed! All textures are available for personal or commercial use. They are NOT allowed to be resold or to be claimed as your own.  Just click through for the larger size file, right-click that one and save the texture to your own computer.  My sample uses of the texture are not available for any use.

Now – if you’ve gone wild with a texture and just LOVE it … a small donation showing that love sure would be appreciated (but is not mandatory).   Just go to PayPal.com and send your donation to DogBreedz (at) yahoo.com.  Happy Texturing!
